前言是書本開頭的介紹，通常由作者撰寫，用於說明寫作目的、背景或此書的由來。

「Preface」用於正式場合，如書籍或學術著作，多由作者本人撰寫。有別於「foreword」（多由他人寫）。勿與「introduction」混淆，後者是介紹內容本身。
