これは、特に悪いことや重大な出来事が将来起こることを示すしるしや予兆です。

「前兆」「兆し」は主にフォーマルや文学作品で使われ、特に悪い出来事について使われることが多いです。「omens（前兆）」と似ていますが、「portents」は警告や重大さを強調します。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
