すでに苦しんでいる人に対して、さらにひどいことを言ったりしたりすること。思いやりのない態度を批判する際によく使われます。

比喩的な表現で、実際に蹴ることはほとんどありません。'don't kick someone when they're down' の形で「苦しんでいる人に追い打ちをかけるな」と忠告する際によく使います。
