공기나 물에서 정해진 위치 없이 떠 있는 것, 또는 (소문·생각 등이) 명확한 출처 없이 사람들 사이에 퍼지는 것.

Usage Notes (Korean)

주로 구어체에서 사용됨. 사물이나 사람이 실제로 물·공기 중에 떠 있는 경우와 (소문, 정보 등)이 명확한 출처 없이 퍼질 때 모두 쓴다. 'rumors floating around'가 대표적.
