'Erstwhile' एक औपचारिक शब्द है, आमतौर पर लेखन में प्रयोग होता है, न कि रोज़मर्रा की बातचीत में। अक्सर 'erstwhile friend' या 'erstwhile partner' जैसे शब्दों में आता है। अनौपचारिक स्थिति में इसके बजाय 'former' बोलें।
