水や風、時間などの力によって何かが徐々に削られたり、弱まったりすること。また、自信や信頼などが少しずつ失われていく様子も表す。

地質や環境などの科学的な文脈でよく使われますが、「信用が失われる」など抽象的な事柄にも使います。「eroding away」は完全に消えていくニュアンスです。
