Definition

누군가가 자신감이나 의욕을 잃어 어떤 일을 하려는 마음이 꺾이게 하거나, 그렇게 느끼도록 설득하는 것.

보통 'from'('discourages her from applying')과 함께 써서 무언가를 그만두게 유도하는 뉘앙스다. 'puts off'보다 격식 있고, 완전히 막는 'prevent'와는 다르다.

The bad weather discourages people from going outside.
