어떤 원천이나 근원에서 얻다, 혹은 그것에서 발전하다라는 뜻이다. 주로 학술 또는 과학, 수학에서 사용된다.

'derive from'은 주로 공식적, 학술적 맥락에서 사용된다. 과학/수학에서 논리적으로 '이끌어내다'라는 의미가 있다. 'originate', 'come from'과 혼동할 수 있으나, 물리적 이동에 쓰이지 않는다.
