何かをしっかりと握ったり、感情的に執着したりすること。また、考えや信念、人に固執することも表す。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'しがみつく'は、物理的にも感情的にも使われ、特に『希望にしがみつく』『思い出にしがみつく』のように比喩的にもよく用いられる。『hold on to』よりも執着のニュアンスが強い。
