यह अभिव्यक्ति अक्सर व्यापार, खेल या शिक्षा में लक्ष्य अथवा अपेक्षाओं के अनुसार परिणाम मिलने पर उपयोग होती है। थोड़ी औपचारिक है, रिपोर्ट या समाचार में आम। 'fall short of expectations' भी प्रचलित रूप है। 'miss the goal' (लाक्षणिक) से न मिलाएँ।
