非常に大きな音のために耳が聞こえなくなること。一時的または永久的な聴力喪失を指す場合がある。

多くの場合受動態（「was deafened」）で使われます。突然で強烈な音を表現する時によく使います。「〜によって耳が聞こえなくなった」という使い方が一般的です。
