시간을 두고 조금씩 잘라내서 무언가를 줄이거나 없애는 것. 실제로 자르는 경우뿐만 아니라, 자원이나 힘 등을 점차 약화시키는 의미로도 쓰인다.

주로 회화체나 평범한 상황에서 사용. 실제 자르기뿐만 아니라 은유적으로 조금씩 약화시킬 때도 쓴다. 'cut out'(한 번에 완전히 제거하다)와 혼동하지 않게 주의.
