Used to emphasize that something is much greater or better than anything else. It makes a comparison much stronger.
Usage & Nuances
'By far' is almost always used with superlatives ('the best', 'the biggest'), placed before them ('by far the best'). It can appear mid-sentence for emphasis. Not used with comparatives like 'better', only with the highest degree.
