To assume something is true without proof (logical fallacy), or to raise a question that naturally follows from what was just said.
Usage & Nuances
Originally refers to a logical fallacy (assuming the conclusion), but is often used informally to mean 'raises the question'. Formal and academic in the logical sense, but more common informally as 'this begs the question'. Not the same as 'ask the question'.
