To say written words aloud so someone can hear them, or to transfer data or information into a computer system.

'Read in' can mean to read aloud to someone (especially instructions or legal documents), or in tech contexts, to input data into a computer program. Much less common than simple 'read'; use with objects (read in a file, read in the results). Not used for casual reading.
