Chose not to do something, especially to not participate in voting or to avoid a particular activity or food.

Used most formally for voting contexts (“abstained from voting”), but also for personal choices (diet, habits). Typically followed by 'from' + verb-ing/noun. Not the same as 'refused' (active objection), 'abstained' is neutral.
