무언가를 아래로 던지거나, 누군가에게 도전하거나, 열정적으로 혹은 실력 있게 무언가를 하는 것을 의미함.

비공식적이고 주로 도전을 던지거나 열정적으로 할 때 사용함. 'throw down the gauntlet'는 도전장을 내밀다란 의미.
