"Inquired" é formal e geralmente usado no inglês escrito ou em situações educadas. Em conversas informais, "asked" é mais comum. Comum em contextos de negócios, atendimento ao cliente ou ao solicitar informações oficiais. Usa-se muito com "about", "whether", "why" etc.
