누군가를 너무 놀라게 해서 극도로 무서워하게 만들다. 보통 갑작스럽게 강한 공포를 주는 것을 의미한다.

갑작스럽고 강한 공포를 나타내는 비공식적 관용구. 'scare (someone) out of their wits'로도 많이 사용됨. 격식 있는 상황에는 부적절함.
