आमतौर पर तकनीकी, वैज्ञानिक और सामान्य संदर्भों में इस्तेमाल होता है, ख़ासकर वाहनों या अर्थव्यवस्था में ('decelerating growth')। यह 'accelerating' का उल्टा है। बोलचाल में 'slowing down' ज़्यादा सामान्य है। अक्सर continuous tense के साथ आता है।
