Usage & Nuances

Informal when used literally (physically tossing something back), common in sports or when fishing. Figuratively, "throw back" is used for rejecting proposals or comments or to express nostalgia ('that song throws me back to my childhood'). Not the same as 'throwback' (noun) which describes something reminiscent of an earlier time.
