Definición

証人は、事件や事故などを実際に見た人で、そのことについて説明できる人です。裁判で証言する人も指します。

主に法廷や警察の文脈で使います。「eyewitness（目撃者）」は実際に見た人を指します。動詞では「目撃する」「立ち会う」という意味で、フォーマルな表現です。

The police talked to a witness after the accident.

事故の後、警察は**証人**に話を聞きました。
