تستخدم 'upward' غالبًا في السياقات الرسمية أو المحايدة، مثل 'upward trend' (اتجاه تصاعدي) أو 'move upward' (التحرك للأعلى). كلمة 'upwards' تُستخدم بشكل شبيه ولكن في الإنجليزية البريطانية أحيانًا تكون أكثر عامية.
