इसका उपयोग किसी व्यक्ति या चीज़ की दिशा में होने वाली गति दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है। यह किसी चीज़ के प्रति रवैया या किसी लक्ष्य या परिणाम में आंशिक योगदान भी दिखा सकता है।

यह शाब्दिक और रूपक दोनों तरह के प्रयोगों में आम है: 'walk towards me', 'his attitude towards work', 'money towards a new car'. अमेरिकी अंग्रेज़ी में 'toward' भी बहुत आम है; 'towards' ब्रिटिश अंग्रेज़ी में ज़्यादा मिलता है। यह एक preposition है, इसलिए इसके बाद noun, pronoun या -ing form आती है।
