Bir şeye karşı koymayı bırakmak ve ona boyun eğmek; baskı, cazibe veya bir güce yenik düşmek anlamında kullanılır. Hastalık veya yaradan ölmek anlamına da gelir.

Daha çok resmi veya edebi anlatımlarda kullanılır. 'succumbed to temptation', 'succumbed to injuries' gibi kalıplarla rastlanır; 'surrender' veya 'submit' ile karıştırılmaz.
