プロトタイプは、新しい製品やアイデアを試作として最初に作るモデルで、最終版を作る前にテストや改善のために使われます。

技術やデザイン、工学の現場でよく使われます。'プロトタイプを作る'、'テストする'などの表現が多いです。人を表す場合は使いません（その場合はarchetype）。

The engineers built a prototype of the new car.
