사실보다 중요성이나 심각성을 덜하게 보이도록 하다.

주로 좋지 않은 소식이나 실수를 덜 중요하게 보이게 할 때 사용한다. 'play down the risks'는 위험을 축소한다는 의미. 'play up'(강조하다)와 혼동하지 않는다.

The company tried to play down the accident in the news.
