비행기나 배 등 운송수단을 조종하는 행위. 또한 새로운 프로젝트나 프로그램을 시험적으로 운영하는 것을 의미할 수 있다.

주로 비행기나 배에 대해 사용하지만, '프로그램을 파일럿 운영'처럼 새로운 시도를 이끌 때도 씀. 자동차는 'driving' 사용.
