海岸近くに建てられ、上部に強い光を放つ灯台で、船が安全に航行できるように導く建物です。

複数形です。「coastal lighthouses」「historic lighthouses」「lighthouse keeper」などのフレーズでよく使われます。比喩的な意味はあまり一般的ではありません。
