끄다

불, 불빛, 불꽃과 같이 타고 있는 것을 끄다. 또한 희망이나 감정처럼 추상적인 것을 완전히 없애는 의미로도 쓰인다.

'끄다'는 보통 불, 불빛, 불꽃, 혹은 감정(희망 등)을 끝낼 때 사용한다. 전자기기에는 주로 '끄다' 대신 다른 동사를 쓴다.

The firefighter extinguishes the flames with water.
