物を探す時に、手でいろいろ動かして調べること。また、情報などを秘密裏に探ることも表します。

カジュアルな会話に使い、バッグや引き出しなど物理的に探す時や情報を何気なく調べる時にも使われます。「dig around in/through/for」の形で用いられ、土を掘る意味には使いません。
