ムカデは細長い体とたくさんの足を持つ節足動物で、湿った場所や暗いところによく現れ、動きがとても速いのが特徴です。体の各節に一対の足があります。

「ムカデ」は学術的・一般的に使う言葉です。昆虫ではなく、ミリピード（ヤスデ）と混同しないようにしましょう。ミリピードはより丸みがあり、体節ごとに足がたくさんあります。
