To choose someone for a position, usually by voting in an official way. Often used for choosing leaders or representatives.

Most often used formally for political or organizational roles: 'elect a president', 'elect representatives'. Often followed by 'to' or 'as' + position. Not the same as 'select' or 'choose', which are more general. Used passively as well: 'He was elected president.'
