To severely damage, destroy, or greatly reduce the number of something. Although originally meaning to kill one in every ten, it now usually means to devastate a large part.

Now used mainly in formal or descriptive writing. Often refers to populations, industries, or environments ('The forest was decimated by fire'). No longer means exactly 10%, but any large destruction. Sometimes confused with 'devastated'.
