한 단계에서 다른 단계로 바뀌는 과정이나 그 시기와 관련된 것. 최종적이지 않고 중간 단계임을 의미함.

대부분 명사 앞에 붙여 사용하며(예: 'transitional phase'), 두 단계 사이의 중간 단계를 의미함. 학술, 정치, 기술 분야에서 자주 쓰임.

The country is in a transitional period after the election.
