誰かに腹を立てて、わざと嫌がらせや迷惑をかけるために何かをすること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

日常的に使う表現で、ちょっと意地悪や仕返しのような行動を指します。'in spite of'（〜にもかかわらず）とは意味が違うので注意。
