내가 알지 못하거나 예상치 못한 순간에 갑자기 무언가가 일어나는 것.

'caught unawares', 'take someone unawares'와 같은 구에서 많이 쓰이며, 누군가를 갑자기 놀라게 하거나 준비되지 않은 상태임을 뜻함. 자기 자신에 대해서는 잘 쓰지 않음.
