고통, 두려움, 탈출하려는 시도로 매우 거칠고 통제되지 않은 움직임을 하는 것. 물, 침대, 기타 공간에서의 격렬한 몸부림도 뜻함.

비격식적이며 묘사적 표현. 고통·공포·패닉 등 극한 상황에서 사람이나 동물이 격렬히 움직일 때 자주 씀. 'bed', 'water', 'sleep'와 조합됨. 평범한 움직임에는 사용하지 않음.

The fish began to thrash around when it was out of water.

물고기는 물 밖에 나오자마자 **허우적거렸다**.
