상대나 상황에 대해 더 이상 저항하지 않고 패배를 인정하거나, 소유권이나 통제권을 넘겨주는 것.

격식적·군사적인 상황 뿐만 아니라 감정이나 욕구에 굴복하는 경우에도 사용됨. 일시적인 중단에는 쓰이지 않음.

He surrenders when he sees he cannot win the fight.

그는 싸움을 이길 수 없다는 걸 알게 되면 **항복한다**.
