Uma encosta íngreme ou um grande penhasco que separa duas áreas de diferentes altitudes, geralmente formado por erosão ou falhas geológicas.

Termo usual em geografia e geologia para descrever acidentes naturais de relevo com mudança brusca de altitude. Não confundir com 'penhasco' (geralmente no litoral) ou 'declive' (mais suave). Usa-se muito 'na borda da escarpa'.
