特定の場所や建物、都市のまわりに広がる地域や土地のこと。主に、その近くに位置するエリアを指します。

主に書き言葉や文学的な表現で使われます。「environment（環境）」とは異なり、特定の場所の周囲を示します。単数形ではほとんど使われません。
