與男人生活在一起，類似於妻子但社會地位較低的女性，通常出現在歷史或皇室背景中。

多用於歷史、文學語境，現代生活中很少見。專指一夫多妻社會中地位低於妻子的女性。不要與「情婦」混淆，「妾」是一種更正式的關係。
