To visit someone briefly, usually without a formal arrangement, or to look inside a place to check something quickly.

Mainly informal and common in British English. Used for quick social visits ('I'll look in on you') or briefly checking a place. Not the same as 'look into' (investigate). In American English, 'drop by' or 'stop in' are more common for this sense.
